Greater Laggan Area, UK

Map United Kingdom

The Greater Laggan Area consists of four producing subsea fields (Laggan, Tormore, Glenlivet and Edradour) that are tied back to the Shetland Gas Plant (SGP) at Sullom Voe on the Shetland Islands via a long-distance 143-kilometre dual flowline system.

The fields are located approximately 125 kilometres northwest of the Shetland Islands at its furthest and in 600 metres of water at its deepest.

Laggan and Tormore fields

Status: In production

Discovered in 1986 and 2007 respectively, the Laggan and Tormore gas-condensate fields are located off the Shetland Isles. Here, despite challenging water depths, currents and weather, the longest subsea-to-shore system ever seen was installed in the North Sea in the mid-2010’s. The new wells, of which there were initially five developed were subsequently tied back to a new gas processing plant on the Shetland Isles via a 140-kilometre pipeline network. Production began in February 2016 whilst a fifth producing well at the Laggan field was added in 2019.

Edradour and Glenlivet fields

Status: In production

In August 2017, two new gas fields – Edradour and Glenlivet – came on stream through the Shetland Gas Plant. The two fields lie some 75 kilometres and 90 kilometres northwest of the Shetland Isles, in water depths of 295 metres and 435 metres respectively. The project consists of three wells tied back to the existing Laggan-Tormore production system, which exports the gas to the onshore Shetland Gas plant.

Glendronach

Status: Pre-development

The Glendronach field lies in a water depth of approximately 320 metres and was discovered in 2018 by TotalEnergies within the Spinnaker and Royal Soverieng formations, opening up a potential new play opportunity for the partners in the Greater Laggan Area and is estimated to contain approximately 80bcf of gas initially in place.

Development of the field would increase production, extend the life of the existing facilities, and produce more certainty to potential future developments, such as additional infill wells, and to other third parties that are evaluating potential development projects in the area.

The Greater Laggan Area partners are undertaking a review of the field’s previous development plans with a view to progressing it towards Final Investment Decision.

Shetland Gas Plant

Status: In production

Located on the north coast of the main island of the Shetland Isles, the Shetland Gas Plant was built to process gas from the Laggan-Tormore fields. When the production fluids arrive onshore, the liquids are removed and piped to the nearby Sullom Voe oil terminal, while the gas is processed before transported via the SIRGE pipeline system towards the United Kingdom.
